My Third Kumbh Mela. Incredible India.

My Third Kumbh Mela.

This year, I had the privilege of attending the Kumbh Mela for the third time, an experience that felt even more extraordinary due to its rarity. This particular Kumbh Mela, in Prayagraj known as the Mahakumbh, happens only once every 144 years, driven by a unique alignment of astrological events. The atmosphere was indescribable, with millions of pilgrims gathering to seek blessings, visit the sadhus, and perform the sacred ritual of bathing in the Ganges, believed to cleanse one’s sins and bring spiritual renewal.

Our group consisted of nine participants and myself, and to ensure a seamless experience, Nomad Photo Expeditions appointed five guides and «door-openers.» Their expertise and connections allowed us access to areas a bit more secluded giving us an intimate view of the event’s vibrant and chaotic essence.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Kumbh was our encounters with the Naga Sadhus, the enigmatic ascetic monks who are often the main attraction of the festival. Covered in ashes and wearing little to no clothing, they symbolize renunciation of worldly life. We had the rare opportunity to sit with them and observe their rituals up close. One memorable moment was when a Naga Sadhu, who had been sitting in silent meditation for hours, suddenly broke his stillness to offer us blessings, dipping his fingers into sacred ash and marking our foreheads. It was a humbling gesture and a powerful reminder of the depth of their spiritual commitment.

Another highlight was witnessing the procession of the Naga Sadhus as they made their way to the Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Their arrival was marked by chants, conch shells, and the beating of drums, creating an electric atmosphere. As they dashed into the river to bathe, the energy was infectious, and the sight was both dramatic and deeply moving.

Our journey concluded, once again, in Varanasi, a city that perfectly encapsulates the spiritual heart of India. The contrast between the serene sunrise boat rides along the ghats and the vibrant chaos of the narrow streets made for an unforgettable end to the trip. The combination of the Kumbh Mela and Varanasi provided not only exceptional photographic opportunities but also profound cultural and spiritual insights. It was a journey of discovery and connection, both to the people and traditions of India and to the deeper meanings they embody.
